Becoming a mother can be both an extremely enjoyable experience and a stressful time--and everything in between. If you have a partner, friend or family member who is pregnant or who has just become a new mother you may be thinking about what to get her as a gift.
While many gifts center around the baby, or general items for the mother such as flowers and food, it may also be nice to give a gift which supports mental wellbeing as this is an important element of becoming a new mom and can be a struggle for many. We’ve shared some ideas below:
Offer to help her out in some way: Taking her to an appointment, looking after the baby for a while to let her sleep, cooking for her or helping her with her chores. These gifts don’t cost a penny, but may bring her so much more joy and relief than something you could buy.
Give her a book: The compassionate Mind Approach to Postnatal Depression by Michelle Cree or Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts by Karen Kleiman are two of our favorites to support mothers with their mental health
Share the Canopie app: You can gently recommend she looks after her mental health through our program and suggest you’ll support her along the journey - maybe you can do the program with her!
A gift to remind them of who they still are to you: Becoming a new mother can make a new mom feel like she is losing her identity, so you can think about how to do something that focuses on just her. Even if it can be hard to do many of the things she used to enjoy, think about if there’s a way you can try to create something similar to it in a more convenient way. For example, if you used to go to concerts together, make her a playlist of music you think she’d like.
